Athletic Shoe Recycle & Reuse Program

Monday, January 2 through Friday, April 27, 2012

Bring in your worn out athletic shoes to be Recycled!
Donate gently worn or new shoes (all kinds) to help others!

In conjunction with SWALCO (Solid Waste Agency of Lake County) the library will again be collecting worn-out all brands of worn-out or unwanted athletic shoes, from Monday, January 2 through Friday, April 27, 2012 to be recycled. Every year, across the globe, millions of pairs of athletic shoes end up in landfills or disposed of in some other way creating a lot of waste. With sustainability in mind, the collected shoes will be ground up and recycled into a material that will be used to create long-lasting sports surfaces like tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks, carpet padding and playgrounds.

You can also drop off your gently worn or new shoes (athletic shoes, sandals, flip-flops, boots, dress shoes and work shoes) to be donated to a local shoe charity that gets footwear to people in need. Please note that only athletic shoes can be accepted for recycling, so please make sure the shoes you drop-off for donation are in gently worn or new condition. Last year, our shoes that were donated here were given to people in Joplin, MO to help after so many lost everything to the tornado.

We appreciate your support with this important program! Thank you for making a difference in your community and beyond!

More Convenient Library Card Policies

Patrons renewing their library cards will have an easier time doing it with the recent changes made to our policies. For a speedy renewal, simply present your library card and a drivers license or Illinois State ID whose address matches the one on your library card account and you’re ready to go!

We’ve also made it easier for patrons to give others permission to pick up holds, check out items and pay fines or fees for them. A patron can come to the library and sign a form allowing specific individual or multiple individuals to access their account. To make it more convenient, the primary person allowed access can have their own library card or drivers license number scanned into the patron’s account. That way, they don’t have to carry the patron’s library card with them to pick up items. Anyone other than the primary person must present the patron’s library card. For more information see our brochure.
