Youth Services Library Assistant

The Grayslake Area Public Library District is seeking a Library Assistant for itsYouth Services Department. This part time position is approximately Monday and Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and one Saturday and one Sunday per month. Flexibility is a must and occasional additional hours may be required to help with a program or cover desk hours due to vacations or illness.

Applicants should have an LTA degree, Bachelors Degree, or be students enrolled in an LTA or MLS program. A strong preference will be given to candidates with child development experience, and library reference and reader’s advisory experience. Applicants with skills using electronic reference products such as subscription databases, and the Internet are highly desirable.

Primary duties include providing reference and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons, and assisting the patrons with the use of a variety of technologies. Participating in monthly staff meetings, programming, and preparing library displays are also included.

Applicants must have the ability to hear and speak with patrons and staff in person and over the phone, use a computer keyboard, and see a computer screen. A complete list of qualifications and duties for the position is available at the Circulation Desk.

Hourly rate is $14.92 per hour. Benefits include pro-rated vacation, sick days, personal days and holidays. Participation in deferred compensation plan, life insurance and dental insurance are optional.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Youth Services Library Assistant

GRADE LEVEL: Paraprofessional 1

DEPARTMENT: Youth Services

REPORTS TO: Head of Youth Services

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

HOURS PER WEEK: Part-time approximately 11 hours per week, Monday and Tuesday mornings 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., one Saturday, and one Sunday a month.

BENEFITS: 2 weeks pro-rated paid vacation, paid holidays, sick days, 2 personal days. Optional participation in dental insurance, additional life and long-term disability insurance and deferred compensation plan.

BASIC FUNCTIONS: Provide reference and readers’ advisory services to youth department patrons using a variety of resources including print and electronic resources. Works with other youth services staff to plan, implement and evaluate programming for children. Participates in monthly staff meetings and assists with displays, posters, and brochures. Other related duties as assigned.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides reference and readers advisory service

  • Assists and instructs patrons in use of library materials and equipment.

  • Assists with summer reading program.

  • Provides tours and programs as needed.

  • Prepares library displays and bibliographies

  • Works with all staff to plan, implement and evaluate programs and services.

  • Cooperates with local agencies to provide information to the public.

  • Strives for excellence in services provided to staff and patrons.

  • Conducts all library business in a professional and cooperative manner.

  • Demonstrates good judgment and problem solving skills.

  • Maintains and reports statistical records of program attendance and patron assistance.

  • Assists with signage, crafts, fliers and graphics.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend meetings as needed, some of which may be in the evening or on weekends

  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No direct supervision.

AUTHORITY:

The department head must approve approximately 25% of the activities. Once approved, the employee has 75% of the freedom to decide how activities are carried out.

ABILITY TO:

  • Understand and interpret computer data relayed through a computer terminal.

  • Apply procedure and function keys to access, retrieve and input information from a

  • computer.

  • Skill in operating a computer terminal, electric typewriter and word processing

  • equipment.

  • Bend, twist, stoop and reach books and other library materials on shelving from floor height to 7 ft. high, using step stools as needed; push, pull, and lift computers and peripherals weighing up to 20 lbs.

  • Perform detailed work accurately.

  • Work with a variety of staff members in a cordial and congenial manner.

  • Use tact and diplomacy to communicate effectively with patrons and coworkers in person, in writing and on the telephone.

  • Coordinate work efforts with other Management Team members and work cooperatively on a variety of initiatives, projects and programs.

  • Understand and follow supervisory guidance.

  • Adhere to attendance requirements.

  • Exercise judgment and initiative when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s or LTA degree. MLS classes would be helpful.

Experience: Prior library experience (1-2 years) with emphasis in reference work desirable or teaching experience. Familiarity with children’s literature and non-fiction materials would be helpful. Familiarity with computerized catalog, online databases, Internet, children’s print and non-print materials would be helpful. Knowledge and experience with personal computers and printers is desirable.

Personal Attributes: Dependability, attention to detail, excellent research skills, creativity and the strong ability to work with the public and coworkers congenially. Must be able to work closely with children. Ability to work with minimum supervision.
